Hey, y’all! I’m happy to be back sharing on the blog today. Can you believe it’s already November?! November is so much more than pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters, although those are two of my very favorite things.
November commemorates Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness, Family Caregivers, Gratitude, Home Care and Hospice, Life Writing, Long-Term Care Awareness and Bereaved Siblings Month. So many good things to talk about are happening this month, but today it’s all about National Family Stories Month, a time to celebrate the richness of our family histories and the wisdom of our elders.
In a fast-paced world, where we’re constantly racing against the clock, taking a moment to listen to the stories of our older relatives can be a truly rewarding experience. So, grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage, cozy up, and let’s explore the importance of capturing our elders’ stories and some fun ways to do it.
Why It Matters:
Our elders are living libraries of knowledge, experiences, and life lessons. Their stories provide a unique window into the past, offering insight into the values, challenges, and adventures of their time. When we listen to their stories, we not only preserve family history but also connect with our roots, building a bridge between generations.

These stories are like treasure troves of wisdom. They often contain valuable life lessons and nuggets of advice that can guide us through our own trials and tribulations. Plus, as our loved ones age, their stories become an increasingly precious resource. Capturing them helps ensure that their experiences and wisdom are not lost to time. Our aging loved ones get to conduct a life review and pass on a legacy for their loved ones with their knowledge and history.
Creative Ways to Observe National Family Stories Month:
- Storytelling Nights: Organize a family storytelling night. Invite your older relatives to share their stories, whether they’re about their childhood, marriage, or a hilarious adventure. Serve some popcorn, dim the lights, and let the tales flow.
- Storytelling Journal: Create a special journal just for family stories. Encourage your elders to write or record their memories. If they’re not comfortable with technology, offer to be their “scribe.”
- Video Interviews: Set up a cozy corner for video interviews. Prepare a list of questions (we’ll get to that in a moment) and record the conversations. Not only will you capture their stories, but you’ll also have something to cherish for years to come.
- Family Recipe Day: Combine food and stories by making a family recipe together. This can be an excellent conversation starter as the kitchen is often a place where cherished memories are created and shared.
Questions to Spark Those Stories:
Getting your older relatives to open up and share their stories might not always be easy, so here’s a list of questions to get the conversation flowing:
- What’s your earliest childhood memory?
- How did you meet your spouse or partner?
- Can you recall any family traditions from your childhood?
- What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
- Do you have a funny or memorable travel story?
- What historical events do you remember vividly, and how did they impact you?
- Share a valuable life lesson you’ve learned over the years.
- Tell us about any significant challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them.

Remember to be patient and give your loved ones time to reminisce. Sometimes, it’s the unexpected stories that turn out to be the most precious.
So, this November, let’s take a break from the hustle and bustle and celebrate National Family Stories Month by connecting with our elders. Their stories are gifts waiting to be unwrapped, and the joy of discovering them is immeasurable. Share your family stories, keep the memories alive, and pass on the wisdom to future generations. Happy storytelling! 📚💕
